letterer

/ˈlɛtərər/
IPA guide

Other forms: letterers

When you need someone to hand-paint a sign for your ice cream shop or to design the printed words in the comic book you're publishing, you need a letterer, someone who paints or draws text.

If you pay attention to particularly well-designed signs in front of restaurants and shops in your town, you'll notice the style of their letters. In many cases, a letterer designed those letters, and sometimes even painted them by hand. Letterers also design the text in graphic novels, comic strips, and picture books, to accompany the illustrations. What letterers do is called lettering.
