    She gave him the feather pom-pom, which looked like a lopsided bird with all the pieces sticking out of the side and a lump in front like a tilted head.

    It took a few tries to dislodge it, though.

    Then the mas came out behind it, blowing up and back in an arc.

    the uneven manner of walking resulting from an injured leg
    Wonky fell to the asphalt and continued rolling along with its lopsided hitch.

    He strummed a discordant note that hung in the warm morning air.
  14. incident

    “We had a little incident this morning.”
  15. cast
    put or send forth
    He cast an eye toward Mr. Abara’s yard.
  16. smear
    a streak or mark made by dirt or some sticky substance
    Finally, she wiped her hands on her shorts, leaving a glittery, fuzzy orange smear that slanted to her knee.
  17. slick
    made smooth, as by ice, grease, or water
    Misty was slick with sweat and walked like her legs were made of jelly.
  18. irresistible
    overpoweringly attractive
    It had never seen so many bound together like this, an irresistible presentation, ripe for the taking.
  19. acrid
    strong and sharp, as a taste or smell
    It was sweaty and acrid, and there was a saltiness in the air she’d only known on the sea.
  20. conjure
    summon into action or bring into existence
    What she didn’t want was to conjure it up again.
  21. hindsight
    understanding the nature of an event after it has happened
    “Or hindsight,” Misty added softly.
  22. dread
    fearful expectation or anticipation
    The feeling of dread washed over her again.
  23. intently
    with strained or eager attention
    Like a sense of being watched intently.
  24. spare
    lacking embellishment or ornamentation
    Despite all her uncle’s bold, brash carnival designs outside, the apartment was spare and neat, with pale walls and dark polished furniture, most of which Uncle Andrew had designed himself.
  25. actuality
    the state of being real or true
    In actuality, right at that moment, she would have preferred it all to stop.
