    He strummed a discordant note that hung in the warm morning air.
  14. incident

    “We had a little incident this morning.”
  15. cast

    He cast an eye toward Mr. Abara’s yard.
  16. smear
    a streak or mark made by dirt or some sticky substance
    Finally, she wiped her hands on her shorts, leaving a glittery, fuzzy orange smear that slanted to her knee.
  17. slick
    made smooth, as by ice, grease, or water
    Misty was slick with sweat and walked like her legs were made of jelly.
  18. irresistible
    overpoweringly attractive
    It had never seen so many bound together like this, an irresistible presentation, ripe for the taking.
  19. acrid
    strong and sharp, as a taste or smell
    It was sweaty and acrid, and there was a saltiness in the air she’d only known on the sea.
  20. conjure

    What she didn’t want was to conjure it up again.

    “Or hindsight,” Misty added softly.

    The feeling of dread washed over her again.

    Like a sense of being watched intently.

    Despite all her uncle’s bold, brash carnival designs outside, the apartment was spare and neat, with pale walls and dark polished furniture, most of which Uncle Andrew had designed himself.

    In actuality, right at that moment, she would have preferred it all to stop.
