    Fascism is a movement that gives all power to the government and does away with individual freedoms.

    bring or lead someone to a certain action or condition
    Many Americans worried that this action would draw the country into war.
  5. ration
    restrict the consumption of a relatively scarce commodity
    Rationing is a system that limits the amount of scarce goods people can buy.
  6. bond
    a certificate of debt issued by a government or corporation
    By purchasing bonds, Americans lent money to the government.
  7. internment

    These places were called internment camps. They seemed like prisons to the families forced to live in them.

    In 1941, President Roosevelt issued an order that banned discrimination in war industries.

    Radar is an electronic system that uses sound to identify objects from a distance.

    systematic killing of a racial or cultural group
    Genocide is the murder of an entire group of people, based on their race, culture, or beliefs.

    an act of mass destruction and loss of life
    This period of Germany's genocide against the Jews in now known as the Holocaust.
  17. anti-Semitism
    the intense dislike for and prejudice against Jewish people
    Hitler and the Nazis began to promote anti-Semitism, or hatred of Jews.
  18. ghetto
    the restricted quarter of European cities where Jews lived
    A ghetto is an area in a city where members of certain minority groups are forced to live. Jewish ghettos had existed in European cities and towns for centuries.
  19. purpose
    what something is used for
    But under the Nazis they now had a special purpose. Jews were held in ghettos until they could be sent to concentration camps.
  20. atomic
    deriving destructive energy from a nuclear reaction
    Scientists were trying to create the first atomic bomb.
  21. result
    something that follows as a consequence
    Much of Japan's growth was the result of its taking over other islands in the Pacific Ocean.
  22. determine
    find out or learn with certainty, as by making an inquiry
    The economic cost of the war is harder to determine.
