  1. forum
    a public facility to meet for open discussion
    A forum is an open area in a city filled with public buildings, temples, and markets.
  2. republic
    a form of government whose head of state is not a monarch
    In 509 BCE, leading Romans overthrew the kind and formed a republic. A republic is a government in which citizens have the right to vote and elect officials.
  3. identify
    consider to be equal or the same
    Romans made Greek mythology their own by identifying their gods with those of the Greeks.
  4. diplomacy
    negotiation between nations
    The Roman people were feared conquerors. They also made skillful use of diplomacy.
  5. legion
    a large military unit
    The basic unit of the Roman army was the legion. Each legion had from 4,500 to 5,000 heavily armed soldiers.
  6. constitution
    law determining the fundamental principles of a government
    Roman government was structured by a constitution. This is a system of rules by which a government is organized.
  7. veto
    vote against; refuse to endorse; refuse to assent
    To veto means to stop or cancel the action of a government official or body. In Latin, veto means "I forbid."
  8. magistrate
    a lay judge or civil authority who administers the law
    Power was also divided among the three branches of government. They were the assemblies, the senate, and the magistrates, or elected officials who enforce the law.
  9. violate
    act in disregard of laws, rules, contracts, or promises
    Even elected officials could be tried for violating the law after their term of office was over.
  10. toga
    a one-piece cloak worn by men in ancient Rome
    The symbol of Roman citizenship was the toga, a garment that adult men wore wrapped around their bodies.
  11. policy
    a plan of action adopted by an individual or social group
    The senate advised the assemblies and magistrates. Its advice was almost always followed. It also ran foreign policy and decided how to spend the state's money.
  12. consul
    one of the two magistrates elected annually in ancient Rome
    The consuls were the top officials in the Roman republic.
