Judith Ortiz Cofer was an award-winning author and poet. She wrote numerous essays, short stories, poems, and novels. Her story, "The Latin Deli," won the O. Henry prize and her novel, An Island Like You: Stories of the Barrio, was one of American Library Association's best books of the year.
