    Instead, I’m a tangle of frenetic emotions and thoughts — mostly revealed in a mess of questions.
  9. inordinate
    beyond normal limits
    She talks fast, as if I have somewhere to run when she’s blocking the door, and has an edginess about her that blares that she can take me in a fight.
    Even a fight where I’m the one holding the knife—a knife I don’t know how to wield.
    Or, truthfully, even unsheathe without spending an inordinate amount of time trying to locate the release button again.

    Raising his voice caused echoes of pain to reverberate through his chest.
  11. mire
    soil with mud or muck
    The one who mires his nation through conspiracies and coups.
  12. abut
    lie adjacent to another or share a boundary
    Other than a cluster of droopy trees standing as weak sentries nearby, the land abutting the water on either side was wide open and clear of brush for several yards, after which the forest began.
  13. tryst
    a secret rendezvous, especially a romantic one
    When their mothers had trysts with Gauis, his unacknowledged children would wait in the sunroom that ran along the back portion of the palace, near the kitchens and workrooms.
  14. peal
    a deep prolonged sound
    Another peal of laughter.
  15. careen
    move at high speed and in an uncontrolled way
    His too-eager attempt to kick the ball back had sent it careening the opposite way, into the street.
