Clairboyance: Chapters 24–32

At home, Clara, a middle-schooler in O'ahu, Hawai'i, is torn between moving to Arizona with her Dad and leaving her beloved grandmother and homeland. 1. albatross
a large web-footed bird noted for powerful gliding flight
For a second, I think it can’t be real. It must be a Laysan albatross or another more common bird. But I’d know those deep black wings and forked tail anywhere.
  2. afterlife
    life after death
“Isn’t this where souls leap into the afterlife?” Ikaika asks.
  3. epiphany
a usually sudden insight, perception, or understanding of something
    “I’ve had an epiphany.”
  4. anticipation
    an expectation
“Tell her, Dad.” I squeeze my hands together in anticipation.
  5. imperious
    having or showing arrogant superiority
I wait for Tūtū to burst with emotion — tears or wailing or anything. When that doesn’t happen, I expect her to scold Dad, to stay steady if imperious.
  6. topographic
relating to the natural and artificial features of the land
Which is when it clicks. These loops and scraggly lines demark an aspect of place: elevation! Exactly what Denny and Titus showed me for our science project. Dad’s drawing is a topographic map!
  7. eucalyptus
a Australasian tree valued for its timber and scented oil
I take a deep breath and smell something medicinal and woodsy. It’s coming from the direction of the dirt trail, so I follow it. I can always turn back around if I need to. Up, up, and around a bend. Suddenly I’m surrounded by eucalyptus trees. It’s all I can smell!
  8. ambient
    completely enveloping
It’s darker here. The hillsides block the ambient light.
  9. brainstorm

Is it possible I took the wrong path? I brainstorm ideas.

  12. thicket
    a dense growth of bushes
“This is where your mom and I used to come. There’s another way to get here. More direct, through a thicket of koa trees. But you found it all the same.”
  13. bluff
    a high steep bank
I follow him along a ridge and then to a grassy bluff.
  14. render
show in, or as in, a picture
While I get a lot of compliments on my contest entry, it’s Leo’s drawing that makes me pause. He’s rendered the Ka‘ena peninsula from the perspective of the ocean, so that the land is reaching out to the viewer.
  15. rendition
a performance of a musical composition or a dramatic role
Dad does a rendition of “Pūpūkea,” and Tūtū dances the hula.
