  1. resonate
    produce a deep, clear sound
When he spoke, his voice resonated as if he were using a microphone.
  2. wizened
lean and wrinkled by shrinkage as from age or illness
“What’s he doing here?” a particularly wizened sheyd sitting nearby shouted, as only just now did he even think to turn away from the scene unfolding on the stage.
  3. admonish
scold or reprimand; take to task
But before she’d finished admonishing him, several sheydim leapt into the aisle and reached for him.
  4. incinerate
    cause to burn
He was a lying fool and had broken her heart, but as much as she hated to admit it, it would break again if Ashmodai just incinerated him on the spot.
  5. persuasion
communication intended to induce belief or action
“Your father was particularly easy. He barely needed any persuasion to wander so willingly into my grasp—human hearts are pathetically predictable.”
  6. reign
a period during which something or somebody is dominant
“How fitting that you should bear witness to this, the end of the reign of tyranny of mortal men over the World to Come.”
  7. tether
    tie with a rope
Boaz jerkily rose to his feet, and after a moment’s thought, Ashmodai conjured a rope between them, tethering them together by the wrists, with only a yard of slack.
  8. slacken
    become looser
One, the rope bonds had slackened, and Ashmodai was gone.
  9. entail
impose, involve, or imply as a necessary result
But he’d also expected Ashmodai to smite him on the spot, whatever smiting entailed, once he realized what Boaz had done.
  10. stint
an unbroken period of time during which you do something
The brief foray into the Book of Daniel aside, day school had given him absolutely no practical advice on how to survive being trapped in the company of a giant lion, nor did his stint at Jewish summer camp, unless he counted an entirely unmemorable lecture about bears—
  11. indecency
the quality of being morally offensive or shocking
“First, you have the indecency to charm me,” she yelled.
  12. slink
    move or walk stealthily
The beast, meanwhile, decided that it had had enough of just watching the two of them and proceeded to ease itself through the hole and slink through onto the floor.
  13. gravitate
    be attracted to
Boaz saw the lion’s eyes train on the small light in his hand, in the way that a cat gravitated toward anything small and shiny.
  14. grisly
    shockingly repellent; inspiring horror
He glanced behind him, where even mad, even feet away from a grisly death at the hands of the MGM lion, Clara was beautiful enough to momentarily stop his heart.
  15. prospect
someone who is considered for something
But it was little comfort, and Boaz was certain that as soon as the lion realized they were a much more appetizing prospect than a flimsy lighter, it’d be back.
  16. proportion
harmonious arrangement or relation of parts within a whole
He might have believed he was standing in the midst of actual ruins, but the longer he looked, the more he realized the proportions were all wrong.
  17. render
show in, or as in, a picture
His aunt was here, rendered in black-and-white and mad, but here nonetheless.
  18. impudence
the trait of being rude and impertinent
“I have had enough of your heartbeat. I’ve had enough of your impudence. I’ve had enough of chasing you and your kin seeking what is rightfully mine.”
  19. disconnect
    separate, sever, or unfasten
Boaz didn’t say anything, certain that if he did, Ashmodai would actually disconnect his head from the rest of his neck once and for all.
  20. regal
belonging to or befitting a supreme ruler
Her light hair was pinned up elegantly, and though she was not particularly tall, she had a presence that matched that of the lion’s. Regal was the first word that came to mind.
  21. treacherous
    tending to betray
    Treacherous witch,” Ashmodai spat.
  22. curate
organize and oversee items in a collection or exhibit
Everything she and Clara had so carefully curated over nearly seventy years was aflame, already beyond rescuing.
  23. antipathy
    a feeling of intense dislike
It had taken no small amount of her Estrie charm and Boaz’s film expertise to wear down the patience of at least four different East Village independent cinemas, who, while competitors, were united in their shared antipathy toward AMC and their weakness for Boaz’s infectious enthusiasm and flattery.
  24. smattering
    a small number or amount
They were interrupted by a smattering of applause.
  25. incomprehensible
    difficult to understand
She was not going to pretend she understood whatever it was on social media that the two of them were attempting, and why it was at all appealing to the youth of today to watch brief, incomprehensible homemade videos, but Clara had made promises to be more...flexible.
