  1. trust
    a group of organizations formed to limit competition
    Some of them joined together to form large groups called trusts. These trusts could control an industry and drive other companies out of business.
  2. challenge
    a demanding or stimulating situation
    Creating lasting change was a challenge.
  3. strike
    refusal to work in protest against low pay or bad conditions
    During a strike, workers refuse to work until business owners agree to their demands.
  4. strikebreaker
    one who works during a protest against working conditions
    Thousands of immigrants eagerly replaced the striking workers. These replacements were called strikebreakers.
  5. boycott
    refusal to have commercial dealings with some organization
    During a boycott, people agree not to buy goods made by a certain company.
  6. progressive
    a person who favors a philosophy of political change
    Some of the people who tried to find solutions to these problems were called Progressives.
  7. muckraker
    one who spreads real or alleged scandal about another
    A group of writers helped spread the Progressives' ideas. These writers were called muckrakers, because they uncovered "muck," or shameful conditions in American business and society.
  8. conservation
    careful management of the environment and natural resources
    Progressives also worked for conservation, or the protecting and saving of the wilderness.
  9. process
    a particular course of action intended to achieve a result
    In 1906, Roosevelt supported two laws to help make the process of making food and medicine safer.
  10. civil right
    right belonging to a person by reason of citizenship
    Civil rights are the rights all citizens should have under the U.S. Constitution.
  11. migration
    the movement of persons from one locality to another
    Between 1916 and 1970, about 6 million African Americans moved from farming areas in the South to big cities in the North. This movement is known as the Great Migration.
  12. motivation
    psychological feature arousing action toward a desired goal
    Low wages and unfair laws in the South gave may African Americans a motivation to leave.
  13. advocate
    a person who pleads for a person, cause, or idea
    W.E.B. Du Bois was another important African American advocate for civil rights.
  14. temperance
    the act of abstaining, especially from drinking alcohol
    Temperance was a call for people to reduce or stop drinking alcohol.
  15. suffrage
    a legal right to vote
    Suffrage is the right to vote, and people who worked for women's suffrage were called suffragists.
  16. suffragist
    an advocate of the extension of voting rights
    Suffrage is the right to vote, and people who worked for women's suffrage were called suffragists.
  17. announce
    make public or official
    It was meant to announce that men and women were equal.
  18. propose
    declare a plan for something
    In 1878, Elizabeth Cady Stanton decided to propose a suffragist amendment to the Constitution.
