    A region is an area that shares physical or human characteristics.

    The Dutch founded New Netherland in the 1620s. It soon became a thriving trade center where people interacted.

    a holder or owner of land
    A proprietor is someone who owns land or property.
  4. diverse
    many and different
    New York and New Jersey had diverse populations. That is, there were people from many different countries and backgrounds living there.

  6. barter

    To barter means to trade one good or product for another.

    The trade laws that England created were largely based on the system of mercantilism. This was an economic idea popular in the 1600s and 1700s, which suggested that governments should limit imports but increase manufacturing and exports.
  13. class
    a group of people sharing similar wealth and status
    Europeans in colonial society belonged to certain classes, or society groups, based on their wealth or importance.
  14. artisan
    a skilled worker who practices some trade or handicraft
    These people, called artisans, specialized in one type of work or trade.
