  1. missionary
    someone sent to a foreign country to spread a religion
    Ships' crews often included Christian missionaries. Missionaries are members of a religious order who encourage people to convert to a particular religion.
  2. circumnavigate
    travel completely around something
    They had circumnavigated, or sailed completely around, the world.
  3. cartography
    the making of maps and charts
    During the Renaissance, mapmakers developed the science of making maps and globes, known as cartography.
  4. ivory
    a hard smooth dentine of the tusks of elephants and walruses
    Known as Prince Henry the Navigator, he was also the first European to make contact with Africa for trade in ivory, gold, and slaves.
  5. treacherous
    dangerously unstable and unpredictable

    Bullion is precious metals melted into bars.
  9. immunity
    the condition in which an organism can resist disease
    The natives dies because they lacked immunity, or the ability of the body to fight a disease.
  10. devastate
    cause extensive destruction or ruin utterly
    By contrast, the Aztecs and the Inca were devastated. Disease had wiped out millions of people.
  11. pagan
    relating to a polytheistic, pre-Christian religion
    The Spanish burned most of these manuscripts, considering them to be worthless, pagan scraps.
  12. viceroy
    governor who rules as the representative of a sovereign
    To govern more efficiently, Spain's king Charles V appointed viceroys, or officers who ruled in the name of the king in the Spanish Americas.
  13. mestizo
    a Latin American with both European and indigenous heritage
    Lower social groups included mestizos, people of Native American and European descent.
  14. mission
    an organization in a foreign land to carry on religious work
    When they arrived in the Spanish colonies, Jesuit and Franciscan priests began missions, or communities dedicated to spreading the faith or to educating and protecting people.
  15. carpentry
    the craft of a carpenter: making things out of wood
    They introduced crafts such as carpentry and metalworking.
  16. accomplished
    highly skilled
    She became one of the most accomplished women writers in the Spanish language.
