  1. gospel
    the written body of teachings accepted by a religious group
    The first four books of the New Testament are the Gospels.
  2. parable
    a story told by Jesus to convey his religious message
    Many of Jesus' teachings are presented in the form of parables, or stories with a moral.
  3. epistle
    a specially long, formal letter
    Most of them are epistles, or formal letters.
  4. controversial
    marked by or capable of causing disagreement
    For some, the idea of Jesus as both human and divine was puzzling or controversial.
  5. trinity
    three people or things considered as a unit
    The Trinity includes God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  6. ethics
    motivation based on ideas of right and wrong
    Much of Jesus' teaching has to do with ethics, or issues of right and wrong, and how to treat people.
  7. denomination
    a group of religious congregations with its own organization
    There are about 2 billion Christians in the world. They are divided into thousands of denominations, or religious groups.
  8. element
    an abstract part of something
    The common elements of Judaism and Christianity are called the Judeo-Christian tradition.
  9. mosaic
    design made of small pieces of colored stone or glass
    A mosaic is a design formed with small tiles of glass, stone, or pottery.
  10. achievement
    the action of accomplishing something
    The Romans prized literature and science. They built on Greek achievements.
  11. oratory
    the act of addressing an audience formally
    The Romans developed oratory, the art of giving speeches.
  12. satire
    a literary genre that uses humor to ridicule human failings and vices
    The author Juvenal wrote satires, works of literature that make fun of their subject.
  13. gladiator
    a professional combatant in ancient Rome
    The Romans enjoyed fights between gladiators, or men and sometimes women who fought one another and wild animals as part of a public entertainment.
  14. tradition
    a specific practice of long standing
    Judges decided what the law was in each case. They based their decisions on custom and tradition.
