    Some families were able to raise a surplus, or more than needed to feed themselves.
  10. specialization
    the line of work you have adopted as your career
    Specialization occurs when people spend most of their time working at a single job or craft.
  11. accumulate
    get or gather together
    Over time, some families accumulated more food and possessions than others.
  12. economy
    the system of production and distribution and consumption
    An economy is the system that a community uses to produce and distribute goods and services.
  13. civilization
    a society in an advanced state of social development
    A civilization is a complex society that has cities, a well-organized government, and workers with specialized job skills.
  14. resource
    a new or reserve supply that can be drawn upon when needed
    A resource is a supply of something that can be used as needed.
  15. manage
    be in charge of, act on, or dispose of
    One role of government is managing society's resources so that people get those things they need to survive.
  16. religion
    a strong belief in supernatural powers that control destiny
    A third common feature of a civilization was an established religion, or a set of shared spiritual beliefs.
  17. class
    a group of people sharing similar wealth and status
    Social classes are groups of people that occupy different ranks or levels in society.
