  1. glacier
    a slowly moving mass of ice
    During that time, thick sheets of ice, called glaciers, covered almost one third of the Earth.
  2. settlement
    a community of people smaller than a town
    Farmers no longer had to keep moving to find food. Instead, they stayed in one place and began building permanent settlements, or small communities.
  3. surplus
    more than is needed, desired, or required
    In time, some farming communities in the Americas grew enough surplus, or extra, food to support large populations, and the first cities emerged.
  4. civilization
    a society in an advanced state of social development
    A civilization is a society—or a people sharing a language, territory, and economy—that has certain basic features.
  5. complex
    complicated in structure
    Among these are cities, an organized government, different social classes, a complex religion, and some method of record keeping.
  6. city-state
    an independent nation comprised of a single town
    A city-state is a political unit that controls a city and its surrounding land.
  7. causeway
    a road that is raised above water, marshland, or sand
    They constructed a system of causeways, or raised roads made of packed earth.
  8. quipu
    Incan device made of knotted cords for calculating
    The runners carried with them a quipu. This was a cord or string with knots that stood for numbers or categories.
  9. terrace
    a level shelf of land interrupting a declivity
    They became experts at creating terraces—or wide, flat steps of land—out of the steep mountainsides.
  10. culture
    all the knowledge and values shared by a society
    A culture is the entire way of life of a people. It includes their homes, clothing, economy, arts, and government.
  11. adobe
    sun-dried brick used in hot dry climates
    The Anasazi built large buildings with walls of stone and adobe, or sundried brick.
  12. pueblo
    a Native American village in the southwestern United States
    When the Spanish later saw similar buildings in the early 1500s, they called them pueblos, the Spanish word for "villages."
  13. characteristic
    a trait that sets someone or something apart from others
    The physical characteristics of the environment in each region influenced population distribution and settlement patters, or where American Indians lived, right up to modern times.
  14. region
    a large indefinite location on the surface of the Earth
    A culture region is a region in which people share a similar way of life.
  15. tribe
    group of people related by blood or marriage
    A tribe is a community of people who share common customs, language, and rituals.
  16. diffusion
    spread of social institutions from one society to another
    This process of spreading ideas from one culture to another is known as diffusion.
  17. potlatch
    a ceremonial feast held by some Native American tribes
    To improve its standing, a family might hold a potlatch, or a ceremonial dinner, to show off its wealth.
  18. maintain
    keep in a certain state, position, or activity
    Their prayers and ceremonies were designed to maintain a balance between people and the forces of nature.
  19. clan
    group of people related by blood or marriage
    A clan is a group of related families.
  20. league
    an association of states or individuals for common action
    According to legend, a religion leader named Dekanawida inspired Hiawatha to organize the alliance. It became the Iroquois League.
