    A drama is a story told through characters played by actors.
  2. comedy
    light and humorous drama with a happy ending
    A comedy, in its original sense, was an entertainment with a happy ending.

    drama exciting terror or pity
    A tragedy was originally a drama that told the story of the fall of a person of high status.
  4. script
    a written version of a play or other dramatic composition
    Those elements compose the script, or written form of the play.

    Such heroes have a tragic flaw, or a weakness of personality, that causes them to make unfortunate choices.

    a person or thing that serves to contrast with another
    A foil is a character who contrasts with a central character in order to highlight each other’s strengths and, more usually, weaknesses.
  10. relief
    the feeling that comes when something unpleasant is removed
    To relieve the seriousness or emotional intensity of tragedy, playwrights often introduce a humorous character for comic relief.
  11. dialogue
    the lines spoken by characters in drama or fiction
    One of the elements that makes a drama memorable is the dialogue, the words spoken by the actors.
  12. monologue
    a dramatic speech by a single actor
    A monologue is a long speech made by one character.
  13. soliloquy
    a dramatic speech giving the illusion of unspoken reflection
    A soliloquy is a speech delivered by a character alone on stage that reveals the character’s thoughts and feelings.
  14. aside
    a line spoken by an actor not intended for others on stage
    An aside is a statement made by a character in a play that’s intended to be heard by the audience but not by other characters on the stage.
  15. stage direction
    instruction or description written in the script of a play
    Stage directions are the notes provided by the playwright to describe how the play should be presented or performed.
  16. setting
    facts or circumstances that surround a situation or event
    Stage directions may describe these aspects of the drama:
    The setting, or when and where a scene takes place, as well as any related background information
  17. action
    the series of events that form a plot
    The action, or how the actors should move and behave, including when they should enter and exit the stage and how they should employ facial expressions, gestures, and tones of voice
  18. special effect
    an effect used to produce scenes that cannot be achieved by normal techniques (especially on film)
    The special effects, such as the lighting, music, sound effects, costumes, properties (called props), and set design
