    Even to Ollie it sounded far-fetched.

    “Robots don’t have strings. That’s marionettes,” said Brian.

    Coco relented. “I’m hungry too.”
  22. suppress
    put out of one's consciousness
    "My dad baked the bread himself,” said Ollie, trying to suppress a surge of longing.
  23. clearing
    a treeless tract of land in the middle of a wooded area
    The trees ended; they found themselves on the edge of a clearing. In the middle of the clearing was a tidy white house.
  24. mirage
    optical illusion in which hot air distorts distant objects
    Ollie stared like it was a mirage. Of all the things she was expecting in this creepy forest, a cozy cabin was not one of them.

    in a manner marked by keen caution and watchful prudence
    After a moment, Coco and Brian sat down, warily, but Ollie stayed standing.

    Coco, intent on being angelic, hadn’t really registered the name.

    The three of them ran, tripping over the threshold.

    “Tetanus,” said Ollie, “will just have to get in line behind dehydration, exposure, starving, and, oh right, kidnapping by evil scarecrows.”

    Ollie barely heard their sniping.

    There were a lot of scarecrows. They jutted out of the field; they clustered around the house.
