    a category of verbs used to express distinctions of time
    Verbs have tenses, or different forms, that tell when something happens or exists.

    a verb tense that expresses actions at the time of speaking
    Present indicates an action that happens regularly or states a general truth: The Tigers play, often.
  12. past
    a verb tense that expresses previous actions or states
    Past indicates an action that has already happened: Last week they played on Tuesday and Friday.

    a verb tense that expresses actions or states to come
    Future indicates an action that will happen: They will play their final game next week.
  14. present perfect
    a perfective tense used to express action completed in the present
    Present perfect indicates an action that happened at some time in the past or an action that happened in the past and is still happening now: We have played on this field for two years.
  15. past perfect
    a verb tense used to express a previously completed action
    Past perfect indicates an action that was completed before another action in the past: We had, played on the old field until the new field was built.
  16. future perfect
    a perfective tense used to describe action that will be completed in the future
    Future perfect indicates an action that will have been completed before another: We will have played twenty-six games before the season ends.
  17. subject
    one of the two main constituents of a sentence
    The simple subject tells whom or what a sentence is about.
  18. predicate
    the constituent of a sentence containing the verb
    The simple predicate is the verb that tells what the subject of a sentence does or is.
  19. active voice
    when the subject of a sentence performs the action
    A verb in the active voice expresses an action done by its subject.
  20. passive voice
    when the subject of a sentence is a recipient of the action
    A verb in the passive voice expresses an action done to its subject.
  21. oral
    using speech rather than writing

    consider or describe as similar, equal, or analogous
