    make up something artificial or untrue
    A sun couldn’t just disappear. Their sky had to have been — and still was — fabricated. Artificial.
  3. deliberation
    careful consideration
    After a lot of deliberation, he decided to keep his mouth shut and went running with Minho for his second day of training, below a bleak and colorless sky.
  4. wan
    lacking in intensity or brightness; dim or feeble
    Thomas followed him to the steel door of the big concrete block and Minho turned to give him a wan smile.
  5. discernible

    Though there had been no discernible change in the light since the sun and blue sky hadn’t appeared that morning, it still felt like a darkness spread over the Glade.

    Thomas had an overwhelming feeling that all of these changes were a spur, a catalyst for the endgame.

    “Well, Newt said maybe tomorrow.” Thomas was just glad he’d gotten that much of a concession.
  9. humility
    a lack of arrogance or false pride
    “No!” Alby shouted, his face showing humility, surrender. “That’s not what I meant. Listen to me. I ain’t saying we should switch or any of that klunk. I’m just saying...I think I need to let you guys make the decisions. I don’t trust myself. So...yeah, I’ll do whatever.”
  10. contention
    a dispute where there is strong disagreement
    He’d grown sick of all the contention.
  11. sabotage
    a deliberate act of destruction or disruption
    He stood outside the window of the Slammer, having left Newt and Minho when they went to investigate the sabotage of the Map Room.
  12. cusp
    the point of transition when something happens or changes
    He trailed off, feeling like he was on the cusp of something.
    Compare with "threshold." Both nouns have literal and figurative meanings. In the example sentences, "threshold" refers to the physical boundary between the Glade and the Maze, while here, "cusp" is used to describe Thomas's mind coming within reach of a new idea about the Maps.
  13. distraught
    deeply agitated especially from emotion
    Minho was standing behind him, looking distraught and dirty, and spotted Thomas first.
  14. preoccupied
    deeply absorbed in thought
    Thomas knew the rebuke should’ve stung, but his mind was too preoccupied.
  15. sheepishly
    in a manner showing embarrassment or shame
    Thomas tripped and crashed to the ground. Smiling sheepishly at Minho, who'd turned to look without slowing, Thomas got back up and caught up to him.
