Seedfolks: List 2

Author Paul Fleischman coined the term seedfolks to describe ordinary people whose lives are connected by a community garden.

    In the Bible, though, there's a river in Eden. Here, we had none. Not even a spigot anywhere close by. Nothing. People had to lug their own water, in buckets or milk jugs or soda containers.
  6. barbed
    having or covered with protective points, spines, or thorns
    The week after that someone built a board fence. Then came the first KEEP OUT sign. Then, the crowning achievement—barbed wire.
  7. slouch
    assume a drooping posture or carriage
    No slouching in your seat in her class or any kind of rudeness.
  8. coincidence
    an accidental event that seems to have been arranged
    "Lettuce," said my father. "All lettuce."
    "What a coincidence," she said back.
  9. shrivel
    wither, as with a loss of moisture
    Then the heat came. The leaves shriveled up. Some turned yellow.
  10. alteration
    the act of making something different
    At night I sew alterations.
  11. humid
    containing or characterized by a great deal of water vapor
    Very hot and humid in July.
  12. funnel
    a conically shaped utensil with a narrow tube at one end
    Buy three funnels to make much easier filling containers.
  13. deltoid
    large triangular muscle covering the shoulder joint
    Deltoids—awesome. Pecs—check 'em out.
  14. blight
    any plant disease resulting in withering without rotting
    What if all my plants started wilting? Or caught blight and died?
  15. pitchfork
    a pronged, long-handled tool for lifting hay
    His part of the deal was that if he saw or heard anyone mess with my tomatoes, he'd come at 'em full speed, holding the pitchfork.
