    When I was a toddler we lived in a dingy room in the back of a tiny hair salon.

    And I was her warrior apprentice.
  13. hostile
    characterized by enmity or ill will
    ...I'd be stripped of everything I worked hard for. And cast out in a strange and hostile land.

    Lena was demure and feminine: the kind of girl that my friends and I would mockingly refer to as a princess.

    All the adults confronted her that evening.

    Ashley's spitefulness seemed far more upsetting than that of my third-grade teacher, because she was my new family.

    dominance through threat of punishment and violence
    The only way to be free of her tyranny was to learn English.
  21. novelty
    originality by virtue of being refreshingly new
    Eventually, the novelty of being the foreigner wore off.
  22. monologue
    a long utterance by one person
    By the end of the night, Diane just talked to herself in a monologue.

    Mom wondered if Mr. Kim was savvy enough to run his own business.
