  1. conflict
    opposition in a work of fiction between characters or forces
    A conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. Conflict is one of the most important elements of stories, novels, and plays because it causes the action.
  2. synonym
    a word that expresses the same or similar meaning
    Take turns listing synonyms, or words with similar meanings, for each concept word.
  3. inference
    a conclusion you can draw based on known evidence
    An inference is an educated guess that you reach by analyzing the details in the text and making connections among them.
  4. style
    a mode of expression typical of a person, group, or period
    An author's style is his or her way of using language.
  5. diction
    the manner in which something is expressed in words
    Style includes a writer's word choice, or diction, and sentence structure.
  6. bibliography
    a list of writings with time and place of publication
    For each source you plan to use, collect the information you will need to create a Works-Cited list, or bibliography.
  7. characterization
    a vivid verbal description
    Characterization is the act of creating and developing a character.
  8. fact
    a concept whose truth can be proved
    A fact is something that can be proved.
  9. opinion
    a personal belief or judgment
    An opinion is a person's judgment or belief. It may be supported by facts, but it cannot be proved.
  10. bias
    a partiality preventing objective consideration of an issue
    In extreme cases, it may even be read as bias, which is an unfair preference either for or against an idea, person, or group.
  11. generalization
    an idea or conclusion having broad application
    An overgeneralization is a conclusion that overstates the facts.
  12. homophone
    a word pronounced the same with another meaning or spelling
    A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word but is spelled differently, such as your and you're, there and their, and its and it's.
  13. repetition
    the continued use of the same word or word pattern
    Repetition consists of saying something repeatedly for effect.
  14. parallelism
    similarity by virtue of corresponding
    Parallelism is the use of similar grammatical forms or patterns to express similar ideas within a sentence.
  15. paraphrase
    express the same message in different words
    To paraphrase is to restate something you read or heard in your own words.
  16. description
    a statement that represents something in words
    A description is a portrait in words of a person, place, or thing.
  17. sensory
    involving or derived from the senses
    Descriptive writing uses sensory details, or language that appeals to the senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch.
  18. retelling
    a new version or adaptation of a story
    A retelling of a story can be either written or oral and should include a clear sequence of events and narrative techniques such as dialogue and descriptions.
