    a brief statement that presents the main points
    A summary is a concise, complete, and accurate overview of a text.
  2. symbol
    something visible that represents something invisible
    A symbol is anything that stands for or represents something else.
  3. symbolism
    the practice of investing things with arbitrary meaning
    Symbolism is the use of symbols.
  4. antonym
    a word that expresses an opposite meaning
    With a partner, come up with an antonym, a word with the opposite meaning, for each of the following words: wearily, frail, and sheepishly.

    The voice of a verb shows whether the subject of the verb is performing the action or receiving it.

    In a nonfiction narrative, the writer often sequences events in chronological order so that one event proceeds to the next in the order in which they actually happened.
  10. transition
    a passage or word that connects a topic to one that follows
    Transitions are words and phrases that connect and show relationships among events and ideas.
  11. resolution
    something settled
    The resolution is the outcome of the conflict in a plot.
  12. dialogue
    the lines spoken by characters in drama or fiction
    A dialogue is a conversation between characters.
  13. tone
    a quality that reveals the attitudes of the author
    An author's tone is his or her attitude toward a subject or audience.
  14. connotation
    an idea that is implied or suggested
    To develop the tone of a literary work, an author considers the connotations of the words he or she uses, or the ideas and feelings associated with the words.
  15. denotation
    the most direct or specific meaning of a word or expression
    Connotations often suggest meaning beyond the word's dictionary definition, or denotation.
  16. mood
    a characteristic state of feeling
    Mood is the feeling created in the reader by a piece of writing.
  17. poetry
    literature in metrical form
    Poetry is one of the three major types of literature, the others being prose and drama.
  18. theme
    a unifying idea that is a recurrent element in literary work
    The theme is a central message, concern, or purpose in a literary work.
  19. lyric
    of or relating to poetry that expresses emotion
    A lyric poem is a highly musical verse that expresses the observations and feelings of a single speaker.
  20. omniscient
    knowing, seeing, or understanding everything
    An omniscient third-person narrator knows everything that happens and reveals what each character thinks and feels.
