    softened in tone

    Hushed means "spoken in a whisper."
  2. inaudible
    impossible to hear; imperceptible by the ear

    If you muted the TV, it's silent, but a sound can be muted, too: soft or muffled. Brass instruments are sometimes played with mutes held over the bells to soften or alter the sound coming from the horn.

    Quiescent is a cool way of saying "quiet" or "at rest." It comes from the Latin verb quiescere, which unsurprisingly means "to come to rest" or "to be quiet."

    Tacit means "unspoken." Taciturn describes someone who is shy, reserved, or otherwise unwilling to say much. Reticent comes from the same Latin root, tacitus, meaning "silent."
