    This insipid handmaiden had been like a hawk, following her around the castle, asking if she could be of assistance.

    This figment of her imagination, which was what it must be—there were no such things as ghosts—sometimes comforted her, and other times made her feel sick.
  22. convene
    meet formally
    She went to her closet, prepared to press the lever that revealed the dungeon-like room where she and the mirror convened—but she found it open.
  23. nuptials
    the social event at which the marriage ceremony is performed
    Snow had never hugged her before. Not after Katherine’s death, not after the rushed nuptials between her and Georg, which the young girl, only seven years old, could not understand.
  24. jovial
    full of or showing high-spirited merriment
    She was with her mother, but this time their time together did not feel jovial.
  25. stupor
    a state of being half-awake
    Henri jumped up from the floor near the fireplace and shook her from her stupor.

    “Change my queenly clothing into a peddler’s cloak.”
  27. congeal
    solidify, thicken, or come together
    “It’s not for you! It’s for Snow White. When she breaks the tender peel and tastes the apple in my hand, her breath will still, her blood congeal. Then I’ll be fairest in the land!”
  28. renounce
    give up, such as power, as of monarchs and emperors
    The possibilities were endless. If she could get her aunt to renounce the throne.

    “Why not?” Henri sounded indignant.
  30. boisterous
    marked by exuberance and high spirits
    “None of my brothers ever pulled a stunt like that one. My mother called me ‘boisterous.’ Says I still am a bit strong-willed.”
