    giving guidance
    The commissioner laughed. "You may be a little ahead of us on that one, Epiphany. I don't have either of those acronyms on my list. We’ll have to check with our advisory panel."
  2. trounce
    defeat in a competition, race, or conflict
    No one had expected them to trounce the other two sixth grades, but they did.
  3. mediocre
    moderate to inferior in quality
    Mrs. Sharkey said that, after all, she knew the current seventh grade, for she had taught them just last year; and in her opinion, when they were very, very good, they were mediocre.
  4. trajectory
    the path followed by an object moving through space
    Its sound rocketed forward, and the laughter that followed traveled the same trajectory.
  5. privileged
    confined to an exclusive group
    "The front of this classroom is privileged territory. There are only two reasons for you to be here. One, you are teaching something to the rest of the class or, two, you have been invited. From now on, the only tricks that I am willing to put up with are those that you can first explain and then teach."
  6. pretext
    a fictitious reason that conceals the real reason
    Then the day before the contest for the district championship Mr. Connor LeDue, the principal of Knightsbridge Middle School, found some pretext to visit Mrs. Olinski.
  7. arrogance
    overbearing pride evidenced by a superior manner
    For all the reasons given—an unprecedented sixth grade championship team, the snobbishness and arrogance of the Knightsbridge team, as well as waiting for Mr. Fairbain to make a fool of himself—the Knightsbridge cafetorium was filled to capacity.
  8. translucence
    the quality of allowing light to pass diffusely
    Dr. Rohmer paled to the point of translucence, and the audience gasped.
  9. anemia
    a lack of vitality
    Mr. Fairbain noticed Dr. Rohmer's sudden anemia, and without knowing what he had done wrong, but knowing it was something, said, “That's all very interesting, young man, but I'm afraid we must move along. Can you answer the question or not?"
  10. phalanx
    any closely ranked crowd of people
    When The Souls came down off the stage, they stood four abreast behind Mrs. Olinski's wheelchair and pushed her toward the back of the room, where the sixth graders converged and formed a phalanx that lifted her—wheelchair and all—onto their shoulders and carried her out of the building and into the parking lot.
  11. unison
    the act of occurring together or simultaneously
    Mr. Singh wheeled her around to the side of the table opposite The Souls. They greeted her. Quietly. In unison. One word. They said, "Welcome."
  12. incarnation
    a new personification of a familiar idea
    He smiled. His smile was as white as his turban and almost as broad. "An incarnation, perhaps. Not a reincarnation. Nadia chose the name."
  13. patron
    a regular customer
    "I'm a big fan of Jeopardy! on the television. When Julian and I lived on the cruise ship, they very often had quiz contests to amuse the patrons. This happened very often when the weather was bad."
  14. complementary
    serving to fill out, enhance, or supply what is lacking
    Mrs. Olinski gave one of her good answers: her "complementary skills" response, dressing it up to say that the team's talents blended like a chorus, making one sound out of many voices.
  15. involuntarily
    against your will
    Finally, almost involuntarily, she said out loud, "Win some. Lose some."
