Here are 33 words that will help you survive on a college campus, looking cool and "in the know." So, if someone wants to meet you on the quad, you'll know where to go. Or, if someone tells you that you've matriculated, you won't be scared.

  1. campus
    a field on which the buildings of a university are situated

    Campuses can be big, small, or anywhere in between. They vary in appearance based on location. For example, a rural school's campus may be surrounded by trees and greenery, while an urban campus may consist of skyscrapers and busy streets.
  2. quad
    a rectangular area surrounded on all sides by buildings
    "Students love to hang out in the quad and have a picnic or do homework."
    While the term implies some sort of square shape, a quad is generally just an area of greenery where students gather. It is in the middle of campus, making it a common area for the university.
  3. matriculation
    admission to a group, especially a college or university
    In a statement, the diocese said that incoming freshman for next fall would be guaranteed four years of matriculation at the current campus. Washington Post (Dec 19, 2013)
    A student is matriculated when he or she officially begins classes at a given university and is working toward a degree.
  4. commencement
    an academic exercise in which diplomas are conferred
    It was a gorgeous, temperate morning for Wellesley’s 136th annual commencement, and once the last baccalaureate degree was conferred, the audience was asked to stand. New York Times (Oct 15, 2014)
    This is the common term used for a college graduation ceremony.
  5. bachelor's degree
    a degree on successfully completed undergraduate studies

  6. master's degree
    an academic degree higher than a bachelor's degree

    This degree is attained in graduate school.
  7. dormitory
    a college building containing living quarters for students

    a doctorate usually based on at least 3 years graduate study

  9. professor
    a member of the faculty at a college or university

  10. dining-hall
    a large room at a college or university
    Then he conducted me to the dining-hall, where luncheon was set on a round table profusely decorated with flowers and sweetmeats. Vay, P?ter
    This is the same concept as a cafeteria. It is used for students to eat and gather, and it often has a meal plan associated with it that students can purchase from the university.
  11. credit
    recognition that a course of studies has been completed
    "He received 4 credits for completing the Introduction to Psychology class."
    This is the numerical value that is attained by each class that a student takes. Classes vary in their amount of credits, and these values add up to create a number that the school deems necessary in order to graduate. This number varies from school to school.
  12. dean
    an administrator at a university or college
    The dean of students says the university is seeking to enhance the quality of student life. Washington Times (Nov 6, 2014)
  13. bursar
    the treasurer at a college or university
    He said that when he walked into the bursar’s office on Friday morning with a 33-pound duffel bag full of cash, the tellers were stunned. New York Times (Jan 15, 2011)
    The bursar's office is where tuition, room and board, and almost anything else associated with the college are paid.
  14. cum laude
    with honors; with academic distinction
    "He graduated cum laude, proving that he was a hard-working and honorable student."
    This honor is denoted on students' diplomas when they graduate.
  15. registrar
    the administrator responsible for student records
    And the registrar's office at John Jay College obliged Seenauth's request to update their records. Reuters (Nov 10, 2014)
    The registrar is in charge of maintaining students' transcripts and progress. If there is a problem with credits, students will often need to visit the registrar's office.
  16. transcript
    a written record of dictated or recorded speech
    They told him that if he didn’t take a leave of absence he would be involuntarily withdrawn, which would be reflected on his transcript. The New Yorker (Dec 1, 2014)
    This is essentially a list of all that a student has accomplished in college so far. It lists the classes that the student has taken in the past and is currently taking, how many credits each is worth, and what their GPA is. Other information may include withdrawn classes or leaves of absence.
  17. GPA
    a measure of a student's academic achievement at a college
    Their pitch about themselves is more about their degree and GPA than what it took to get there. Forbes (Nov 10, 2014)
    This stands for Grade Point Average. It is a summarized, numerical value of a student's academics in college. A number is associated with the grade a students receives in each class, and these numbers are averaged to find the GPA. It is generally assumed that the higher the GPA, the better the student's academic performance is.
  18. scholarship
    financial aid provided to a student on the basis of merit

    This is specific type of financial aid that a student receives to attend college. It is usually for either exceptional academic or athletic performance.
  19. lecture
    an educational talk delivered by a teacher in a classroom
    In classroom settings, auditory learners often find that lectures help them understand the dense textbooks that accompany a course. US News (Dec 1, 2014)
    This style of teaching is done by the professor giving the class information and asking questions here and there, but is mainly focused on what the professor has to say.
  20. seminar
    a course offered for a small group of advanced students
    School district officials insist students are allowed to leave the classroom during seminar only for “curriculum-related activities.” Washington Times (Nov 19, 2014)
    This style of teaching is usually discussion-based, and the professor encourages questions and debates between students to stimulate different viewpoints of a given topic.
  21. extracurricular
    outside the regular academic course of studies
    Those schools also usually have a wealth of extracurricular activities where students further hone their interest in the sciences. Seattle Times (Nov 30, 2014)
    While this term is also used outside of the context of college, in this context, it describes the clubs and activities that a students participates in that are outside of their regular academic classes. These entail athletics, Greek life, community service, and almost anything else that is connected to the school that is not directly associated with a class.
  22. philanthropy
    the act of donating money or time to promote human welfare
    Those two local governments spend $45 million a year on homeless services, and local philanthropy is extraordinary. Seattle Times (Nov 29, 2014)
    This term gets tossed around in college when participating in community service activities. It is the giving of one's time to others, whether it be monetary or physical time.
  23. registration
    the act of registering for something
    "The student put together a tentative schedule for next semester to prepare for his upcoming registration."
    In this context, registration refers to the time in a given semester when a student can officially enroll for classes for the upcoming semester. It is usually in a school's online system where the student can select which classes they would like to take based on time, professor, credits, and location.
  24. audit
    attend academic courses without getting credit
    "He chose to audit the Astronomy class because even though he found it interesting, he did not want to risk the difficult assignments poorly affecting his grade when he did not need the class for his major requirements anyway."
  25. major
    the principal field of study of a student at a university
    A student's major is what he or she decides will be the main focus of his or her academic career at that school.
  26. minor
    of a secondary field of academic concentration
    A student's minor is what he or she decides will be of focus in his or her academic career, but is not the main concentration. It usually requires completion of fewer classes than a major.
  27. advisor
    an expert who gives guidance
    "She met with her advisor to discuss the option of her switching majors."
    An advisor is an academic counselor. Their purpose is to assist students in their academic careers and help with any problems that come along with accomplishing those goals. Each student is assigned an advisor, usually based on which school the student is in within the university or what specifically they are studying.
    Note: The alternate spelling of this word is "adviser." These are generally interchangeable.
  28. prerequisite
    required as a prior condition or course of study
    Before applying to veterinary school, he started taking prerequisites in the evenings, on weekends and in summer school. Washington Times (Nov 15, 2014)
    Prerequisites are classes that must be taken before other classes that are meant to prepare the student for more advanced work. It is usually noted during registration if a course requires a prerequisite. For example, an introductory chemistry course is almost always a prerequisite for organic chemistry.
  29. syllabus
    a summary or outline of what will be covered in an academic course
    The syllabus is a heavy mix of Koranic recitation, Arabic and theology. BBC (Nov 11, 2014)
    This is usually received during the first week of classes. It is a summary of what will be covered through the duration of the class. It often consists of policies related to grading and attendance as well as a tentative calendar for homework assignments.
  30. liberal arts
    studies that provide general knowledge and skills
    Especially in the liberal arts tradition, education is not thought of exclusively as job preparation. Washington Post
    Many colleges have liberal arts as part of students' degree requirements in order to expand their realms of knowledge. For example, if a student wants to be a doctor, instead of just studying biology and chemistry, he or she may also be required to take classes in the humanities, arts, history, or social sciences.
  31. curriculum
    an integrated course of academic studies
    Developing the new curriculum helps it catch up on broad changes in education, Armstrong said. Washington Times (Nov 30, 2014)
    This term is used to describe what will be covered during a given class. It is usually highlighted in the course syllabus.
  32. department
    a specialized division of a large organization
    "He had to go to his department's office to speak with his advisor."
    A student's department is the office that contains faculty, administration, and information specific to that student's major. For example, if a student needs information on what classes he or she is required to take specifically for his or her major (let's say it's Anthropology), then that department will have administrators there to answer those questions. This is also often where professor's offices are.
  33. recitation
    a regularly scheduled session as part of a course of study
    Not all schools have classes that require recitation. For ones that do, this is class time that's usually shorter than the class it's for, and it's used to discuss difficult material with the teacher's assistant. It's designed so that the number of people who can enroll in each recitation section is smaller than the amount of people enrolled in the class. So, here, the students can get more one-on-one time with the teacher's assistant than they can during the regular class time with the teacher.
