Full list of words from this list:

  1. aficionado
a serious devotee of some activity, genre, or performer
Before we get any further, “residency” merits some breaking down for those who might not be Sin City aficionados, and don’t know to have an opinion on the somewhat contentious and ill-defined term.
    - New York Magazine (Jan 22, 2019)
If you're a Las Vegas aficionado, you know a thing or two about the trend for big-name performers to sign on for a string of concerts that command high ticket prices and often sell out. Drake is the latest artist to sign on for a Vegas residency, and he's rumored to be earning $2 million per show.
  2. amphitheater
an oval large stadium with tiers of seats
Palms Casino Resort announced Wednesday the 26-year-old singer's appearance as part of its debut of KAOS, a dayclub and nightclub amphitheater-style complex that is set to open in April.
    - USA Today (Jan 23, 2019)
Cardi B. will also have a Las Vegas residency starting this spring. Above and Beyond, G-EAZY, Kaskade and Skrillex will join her on stage when she performs at the new amphitheater at The Palms resort.
  3. apropos
of a suitable, fitting, or pertinent nature
“Paparazzi” was preceded by a sober speech about the price of fame and how “it is legal to be followed” — even though, she self-consciously added, “I don’t mean to tell you a sob story in some velvet and diamonds” — and ended with the full orchestra kicking in with some apropos suspense-movie chase music.
    - Variety (Jan 21, 2019)
Not to be outdone, Lady Gaga is now performing in two different Vegas shows. Her new act, which opened this week, features Gaga at the piano, singing standards like the ones on her duet album with Tony Bennett. In her debut concert, Gaga gave some of her own pop hits the full orchestral treatment, including “Paparazzi.”
  4. cognizant
having or showing knowledge or understanding or realization
The older, more traditional industry voters whom “Green Book” counts as its core audience are also the least likely to be affected by or even cognizant of the film’s PR snafus.
    - The New York Times (Jan 20, 2019)
Green Book won the Producers Guild of America award for Best Picture this week, and picked up five Oscar nominations to boot. In the past ten years, eight of the PGA Best Picture winners have gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar.
  5. eminent
standing above others in quality or position
She congratulated us and said the nomination was 'eminently well-deserved.'
    - CNN.com (Jan 22, 2019)
RBG, the movie about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, was nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar. The filmmakers reached out to Ginsberg to tell her the news, and she responded that the nomination was “eminently well deserved.” Something that's eminent stands out because it is so well done.
  6. fete
have a celebration in someone's honor
The nominations are out for the 39th annual Golden Raspberry Awards, which fetes the very worst films Hollywood has to offer, and the love – or hate? – has been spread out among a number of films.
    - USA Today (Jan 21, 2019)
The Oscars celebrate the best in film. The Golden Raspberry Awards, on the other hand, commemorate the worst movies of the year. John Travolta, Will Ferrell and even the President himself are up for Razzies this year. (The President was featured in a few documentaries.) Fun fact: Melissa McCarthy is nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie this year, but for different films.
  7. meditative
    deeply or seriously thoughtful
The meditative black-and-white film about life in Mexico in the 1970s — which officially has ticket sales of zero, since Netflix does not release its films in a traditional manner — received 10 nominations over all, including for Alfonso Cuarón’s direction, cinematography and original screenplay.
    - The New York Times (Jan 22, 2019)
The film Roma scored ten Oscar nominations this week, including one for Best Picture. A foreign-language film has never won Best Picture in the history of the Academy Awards. The dialog in Roma is a combination of Spanish and Mixtec, a native language of Mexico. If Roma were to win Best Picture, it would be the first time since 1993 that a black and white film took the top award. Schindler's List was the last film to earn that distinction.
  8. revenue
the entire amount of income before any deductions are made
“Aquaman” has now surpassed $300 million in ticket sales after adding $10 million in its fifth week of release. Globally, the aquatic tentpole has generated over $1 billion in box office revenues.
    - Variety (Jan 20, 2019)
    M. Night Shyamalan’s superhero thriller Glass was number one at the box office last week, but the bigger story is how Aquaman keeps raking in the money. The action movie, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, took in another $10 million even though it's already been in theaters for five weeks.
  9. snub
    refuse to acknowledge
A Star Is Born walked away with 8 nominations, although Bradley Cooper was snubbed in the Best Director category. - People ( Jan 22, 2019)
When A Star is Born was released last summer, fans and critics alike praised Lady Gaga’s performance, and Bradley Cooper’s acting and directing. It was no surprise that the film received eight Academy Award nominations, but it was a shock that Cooper wasn't on the list for Best Director. The word snub is often used when someone or something is left out intentionally. Ouch.
  10. visceral
coming from deep inward feelings rather than from reasoning
“When people like the show, there’s visceral joy,” he said. “I’m just trying to jerry-rig the system to produce that as much as possible.” - The New York Times ( Jan 21, 2019)
Conan O’Brien’s show relaunches this week, and a lot has changed. The show is only a half-hour, there is no band, and you won't see any more musical guests. O’Brien says that he will keep doing pre-taped comedy bits and remotes, like his well regarded trips to Cuba and Japan.
