  1. accustomed
in the habit of or adapted to
We grow accustomed to the Dark--
    When light is put away--
Note the word "custom" ("accepted or habitual practice") within "accustomed". We usually get accustomed to something by deliberately practicing, using, or making a habit of it. But the dark is something that is all around us, that we cannot control, and that we don't actually want, yet we must grow accustomed to it, in order to grow in our lives.
  2. witness
be someone who sees an event and reports what happened
As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp
    To witness her Goodbye--
Being a witness is being able to see, which one needs light to do. The neighbor holds the lamp so that she can see us to say goodbye. The image of light as a neighbor suggests that, unlike darkness, light is not a permanent part of our lives.
  3. vision
    the ability to see
Then--fit our Vision to the Dark--
    And meet the Road--erect--
  4. erect
    upright in position or posture
Then--fit our Vision to the Dark--
    And meet the Road--erect --
  5. disclose
expose to view as by removing a cover
When not a Moon disclose a sign--
    Or Star--come out--within
  6. grope
    feel about uncertainly or blindly
    The Bravest--grope a little--
  7. directly
    without anyone or anything intervening
    And sometimes hit a Tree
    Directly in the Forehead--
  8. alter
become different in some particular way
    Either the Darkness alters--
    Or something in the sight
  9. adjust
adapt or conform oneself to new or different conditions
    Adjusts itself to Midnight--
    And Life steps almost straight.
  10. straight
    in a direct course
    Adjusts itself to Midnight--
    And Life steps almost straight.
The chosen definition fits the example sentence because Dickinson is personifying Life as someone who is walking and taking steps. But "straight" also means "without evasion or compromise," "characterized by honesty and fairness," "in a forthright manner" and "following a correct or logical method"--all of which would fit when you see darkness as more than just a physical absence of light.
