The Diary of a Young Girl: January 2, 1944–April 6, 1944

While in hiding with her family in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, 13-year-old Anne Frank kept a diary of her experiences. Published after Anne's death in a Nazi concentration camp, the diary remains a powerful testament to the everyday horrors of the Holocaust.

  1. mercurial
    liable to sudden unpredictable change
I was suffering then (and still do) from moods that kept my head under water (figuratively speaking) and allowed me to see things only from my own perspective, without calmly considering what the others — those whom I, with my mercurial temperament, had hurt or offended — had said, and then acting as they would have done.
  2. unrequited
    not returned in kind
For a long time we went everywhere together, but aside from that, my love was unrequited until Peter crossed my path.
  3. pensive
    deeply or seriously thoughtful
I’d arrive home in high spirits, chatting nineteen to the dozen, until the events of the morning would repeat themselves and I’d leave the room with my schoolbag in my hand and a pensive look on my face.
  4. provoke

She may be selfish, stingy and underhanded, but she’ll readily back down as long as you don’t provoke her and make her unreasonable.
  5. ulterior
lying beyond what is openly revealed or avowed
But Peter went on talking in a normal voice about what is otherwise a very awkward subject. Nor did he have any ulterior motives.
  6. indulgence
the act of gratifying a desire
Mr. Kugler makes me happy every Monday by bringing me a copy of Cinema & Theater magazine. The less worldly members of our household often refer to this small indulgence as a waste of money, yet they never fail to be surprised at how accurately I can list the actors in any given movie, even after a year.
  7. banter
    light teasing repartee
This lighthearted banter is all very amusing, but reality will prove otherwise.
  8. solace
comfort offered to one who is disappointed or miserable
As long as this exists, and that should be forever, I know that there will be solace for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances.
  9. feigned
    not genuine
He clings to his masculinity, his solitude and his feigned indifference so he can maintain his role, so he’ll never, ever have to show his feelings.
  10. facade
a showy misrepresentation to conceal something unpleasant
I have the hardest time trying to maintain a normal facade when I’m feeling so wretched and sad.
  11. amends
something done or paid to make up for a wrong
So why don’t they try to make amends by asking them what’s what?
  12. candid
characterized by directness in manner or speech
Father and Mother’s biggest mistake in dealing with the van Daans is that they’re never candid and friendly (admittedly, the friendliness might have to be feigned).
  13. disparaging
    expressive of low opinion
It annoys a certain lady that her spouse has such supreme faith in the British, and a certain husband attacks his wife because of her teasing and disparaging remarks about his beloved nation!
  14. surmount
get on top of; deal with successfully
Oh, when will we overcome all these difficulties? And yet it’s good that we have to surmount them, since it makes the end that much more beautiful.
  15. fervently
    with strong emotion or zeal
I slid to the floor in my nightgown and began by saying my prayers, very fervently.
