“So now the penance you’ve given yourself is to be a scythe, forever doomed to take lives as punishment for that one childhood act.”
  9. edict
    a formal or authoritative proclamation
While one might expect such an edict to produce a bloodbath, very few gleanings ever took place. Once word got out, the posers shed their false robes and vanished into the woodwork of the world. To this day the edict remains, but rarely needs to be invoked, because few are foolish enough to impersonate a scythe.

In less than an hour the guests had left, and servants began to clean the detritus of revelry from the eerily silent grounds.

The other scythes then removed their cumbersome outer robes.

  16. vilify

“He sees compassion and forbearance as weakness. But you have other traits that are beginning to awaken. You’ll be a new-order scythe yet!”
  26. platitude
    a trite or obvious remark
To Rowan it sounded like more empty platitudes—but Volta wasn’t like Goddard that way. He didn’t usually speak in lofty, meaningless ideas.
  27. litany
a prayer consisting of a series of invocations by the priest with responses from the congregation
Goddard spouted his ritualistic litany as he moved through the panicked mob, switching his weapons as it suited him, and Rowan swung his hatchet at anything that would shatter, then secretly directed whoever he could toward the one unguarded stairwell.

I can’t recall which scythe began that odious campaign to glean only those who were born mortal, but it spread throughout each regional Scythedom, a viral idea in a post-viral time.
  37. toady
a person who tries to please someone to gain an advantage
Volta chimed in with a hearty but staged laugh. If he had to play toady, he would own the part today.
  38. render
