    We each purchased something, establishing us as legitimate paying customers, and then sat down at the lunch counter for a bite to eat.
  7. moratorium
    suspension of an ongoing activity
    The store owners are asking for a moratorium on the sit-ins.
  8. subside
    wear off or die down
    The beating subsided.
  9. discrimination
    unfair treatment of a person or group based on prejudice
    We weren't about to cooperate in any way with the system allowing the very discrimination we were protesting.
  10. euphoric
    characterized by a feeling of well-being or elation
    Dr. Wright was the first black college president in the country to take such a stand. We were euphoric.
  11. immoral
    not adhering to ethical principles
    We feel that by paying these fines, we would be contributing to, and supporting, the injustices and immoral practices that have been performed in the arrest and conviction of the defendants.
  12. irate
    feeling or showing extreme anger
    There were no arrests that day, but after Tennessee Governor Buford Ellington saw footage of the day's protest on the national news, he was irate.
  13. instigate
    provoke or stir up
    These sit-ins are instigated by, and staged for the convenience of, the Columbia Broadcast System.
  14. bigotry
    intolerance and prejudice
    I appeal to all citizens to end discrimination. To have no bigotry, no bias, no hatred.
  15. inspiration
    the act of arousing to a particular emotion or action
    I came to Nashville not to bring inspiration, but to gain inspiration from the great movement that has taken place in this community.
