Maryland Toleration Act (1649)

First settled in 1634, Maryland was intended to be a refuge for persecuted Catholics. When Protestants rose in numbers, the House of Delegates passed this act to ensure the protection of all Christians. While the spellings and ideas seem strange, these words paved the way for the religious freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment.
