    I watch him from my supine position on the sofa, where I’m balancing my book of short stories on my chest.

    The pain is like oxygen feeding my anger, and I run down the steps and onto the warmth of concrete, needing to be closer, wanting him to feel the fire emanating off my skin.

    “I was trying to leave and she followed me to the car. That’s when Derek showed up. He looked so embarrassed, I didn’t think he’d say anything. We’d just pretend it never happened. But no. Not Derek. He wanted to pulverize me.”
  14. hijack
    seize control of
    “So, what do you guys think? I don’t want to hijack the event—”
    “I think it’s brilliant!”
  15. elephant in the room
    an obvious, important issue that no one wants to address
    “Can we also address the elephant in the room? Or, not in the room, rather? Derek. Will he be there?”
