    Clare fed the hungry flame with twigs and leaves, carefully giving it what it needed to grow but not a sprig more.

    And even from a distance, Clare could see that her skin had gone the color of his tail—a silvery pallor that seemed to mean something very bad.

    Holding to the trunk of a tree, he stole one last look at the small human whose destiny had been strangely intertwined with his own.

    He searched the rat’s face for some clue as to what had transpired.
  14. haggard
    showing the wearing effects of overwork or care or suffering
    His display of beloved human books looked as haggard as Clare felt, and more decorative than anything, for he had long ago memorized their every word.
  15. fateful
    having momentous consequences; of decisive importance
    The headpiece had been left by one of the pesky children when they’d come here that fateful All Hallows’ Eve, fallen from one of their costumes.
