    not in agreement or harmony
    The discordant pattern makes my insides turn over on themselves.
  9. condolence
    an expression of sympathy with another's grief
    What if they are offering condolences?
  10. bystander
    a spectator who does not participate in some event
    People think that every case is packed with bystanders every step of the way, closed off to the public, some big show.
  11. ruminate
    reflect deeply on a subject
    Family meetings are like this—Mom ruminates, we wait, then she lectures.
  12. devoid
    completely wanting or lacking
    Then I throw the doors open, and the bravery escapes me, leaving my lungs devoid of air and my chest deflated when I realize that I do not know where to go.
  13. limbo
    a period of prolonged uncertainty
    Brandon’s life is in limbo, but everything continues to move on without him.
  14. integrity
    moral soundness
    “Cynic. Definition: someone who believes that people are motivated by self-interest. Alternatively—”
    “Distrustful of human sincerity or integrity,” Isabella finishes.

    treat with excessive indulgence
