    It felt like she was stealing time Dad should have spent with me and Celia, flaunting how close they were.

    He says this last part so casually, though.

    “You want me to be more ambitious? Great! Are you going to stay home from work next time one of them gets sick?”

    Somebody with a megaphone announces that it’s time for runners to line up, so we head toward the starting line.
