    The exhaustion that comes with Brian’s power is less debilitating and more of a constant pressure, like moving against a current.

    He flinches. I struck a nerve. But he doesn’t respond to the question. “It appears we are at an impasse,” he says instead.

    Out in the yard, snowflakes drift in the soft glow emanating from the windows.
