stagiaire

/stɑʒjɛr/
IPA guide

Other forms: stagiaires

In a restaurant kitchen, the stagiaire is an intern or trainee, someone who's learning how to be a chef. If it's your dream to cook professionally one day, you may want to try being a stagiaire.

Most stagiaires are unpaid interns who agree to work hard in fancy restaurant kitchens in exchange for learning techniques, a new cuisine, or for the experience of working with a well-known chef. The French word stagiaire means "trainee," and when someone takes on this role in a professional kitchen, they're also described as "staging." This process is often a short-term test period, when the stagiaire is evaluated before being hired for a paid position at the restaurant.
