minimization

/ˌmɪnəmɪˈzeɪʃən/
IPA guide

Minimization is making something as small as it can be. Scientists say that the minimization of carbon emissions in the atmosphere must include replacing cars and trucks that run on gas with electric vehicles.

Minimization usually involves reducing something negative until it's as small as you can make it, whether that's pollution, expenses, or risk. If your personal goal is the minimization of trash, you probably recycle cans and bottles and compost food scraps, so you only have to throw away a very small amount of garbage every week. The word minimization is derived from the Latin minimus, "smallest."
