lepidophobia

/ˌlɛpɪdəˈfoʊbiə/
IPA guide

If you suffer from lepidophobia, you're terrified of snakes. Someone with lepidophobia might go out of his way to avoid the reptile section of the pet store.

There are several different names for "a mortal fear of snakes," including lepidophobia, ophidiophobia, and herpetophobia. In any case, a person with this fear doesn't just have a distaste for snakes or a preference for furry animals, but is deeply afraid of even thinking about snakes. The noun lepidophobia comes from the Greek roots lepis, "scale or scaly," and phobos, "fear, panic, or terror."
