Other forms: fetes galante
A fete galante is an old-fashioned, fancy party that happens outdoors. It's also a category of 18th-century art that depicts such a party; a fete galante painting might include women wearing ball gowns in the countryside.
If you were to throw a modern day fete-galante, you'd invite all your friends to dress in their most formal clothes and meet you in a lush, green park. As you lounged on the grass, musicians would play and refreshments would be served. The term fête galante, or "courtship party," was coined in 1717 by the French Academy to describe the work of painter Antoine Watteau. He and later Rococo artists focused on luxurious details and dreamy, pastoral settings.
