Richard Roundtree (1942-2023) Tribute List
Richard Roundtree — an American actor of stage, screen, and television for five decades — is best known for the 1971 film Shaft (and four of its sequels) as the revolutionary, iconic NYC private detective John Shaft. Diverging from traditional black male film roles, Roundtree's trailblazing Shaft became "the first Black action hero" and helped create an entire genre: Blaxploitation. Beyond Shaft, Roundtree starred in the 1977 television series Roots, the soap opera Generations (1989–1991), and over 150 films. Roundtree's accolades include: a 1972 Golden Globe nomination (most promising male newcomer); a 1994 MTV Lifetime Achievement Award for Shaft; a 2002 Peabody Award; and a 2010 Black Theater Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award. This tribute honors Roundtree's Hollywood career with movie quotes and biographical information.
