aptronym

/ˈæptrəˌnɪm/
IPA guide

Other forms: aptronyms

When someone's name is absolutely perfect for them, capturing either their profession or personality, it's an aptronym. A florist named Lily Rose would be an example of someone with an aptronym.

The word aptronym has been around since the 1950s or so, formed by adding -onym, from a Greek word meaning "name," to apt, or "especially well-suited." There are many real-world examples of aptronyms, from the fastest sprinter of all time, Usain Bolt, to the ornithologist Carla Dove and the meteorologists Amy Freeze and Sara Blizzard. Could their names be more apt?
