/ˈsæbɪθ/
/ˈsæbɪθ/
IPA guide

Other forms: Sabbaths

The Sabbath is a day dedicated to worship and rest in some religions. Jews and some Christians observe the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week.

Exactly when the Sabbath falls differs between religions. Most Christians celebrate the Sabbath on Sunday, while Muslims have a Friday prayer day, and the Jewish Sabbath, or Shabbat, lasts from sunset on Friday until Saturday evening. Sabbath derives from the Hebrew shabath, "he rested." The Bible's Book of Exodus says the seventh day is for rest and worship, but most Christians observe the Sabbath on the first day, when they believe Jesus rose from the dead.
