Justice

Other forms: Justices

Justice refers to the part of the U.S. government that deals with crime and punishment. It’s also someone who serves on the Supreme Court, as in Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to be appointed.

The U.S. Department of Justice is the division of government that's in charge of not only the FBI, the DEA, and the U.S. Marshals, all of which investigate crime, but is also responsible for making sure that people's civil rights are protected. The Justice Department also oversees courts and prisons, making sure that justice — the concept of fairness and lawfulness — is safeguarded.
