Doberman pinscher

Other forms: Doberman pinschers

A Doberman pinscher is a sleek, muscular dog that can be both a good family companion and a fiercely protective guardian.

The original Doberman pinscher was bred in the 1880s by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a German tax collector who wanted the ideal personal protection dog. Today's Dobermans are descended from an early mix of breeds that likely included the German shepherd, Rottweiler, German pinscher, Manchester terrier, and possibly the Weimaraner. Although these smart, loyal dogs are more likely to be family pets than bodyguards, Doberman pinschers are often protective and may be reserved around strangers.
